World Youth Day 2011

World Youth Day 2008 has come and gone! Who can believe how fast it all went in the end? But now is the time to start getting ready for Madrid 2011!

We will be kicking off our WYD2011 campaign with an information evening on Palm Sunday - 28th March 2010. Come along and get all the information you need about what pilgrimage packages are available, how much they will cost, how you can raise funds to get yourself there and more.

At this stage, we have four young people from Kingsgrove who will be representing the parish at this International event. Over the months leading up to Madrid, they will be doing many fundraising events to help them to get there. Please support them by getting involved in all the events they will have between now and August!

FLASHBACKS! How did Kingsgrove get involved in WYD 2008?
Fr. Stan Fortuna
A group of our youth travelled into the city on 1st April to witness the amazing talents of Fr. Stan Fortuna in the forecourt of St. Mary's Cathedral. An amazing time was had by all, watching this awesome priest work his stuff on stage, and praise our God in a style new to us all. Not only did we come to watch, but some of our young people even played the music at the Mass where Fr. Stan did the homily. Good work guys! We're looking forward to all the other events coming up in the lead up to World Youth Day next year.
World Youth Day Cross and Icon in Sydney
On 1st July, young people from Kingsgrove, and some of their families, travelled into Darling Harbour to witness the arrival of the World Youth Day Cross and Icon (the cross is pictured here at Cologne). All reports back from the day have been positive, with some people being touched by the spirit of World Youth Day for the first time. For those who have been to previous World Youth Days, it was like actually attending a WYD event, which is amazing on our own soil! Excitement really is building with just one year to go!

World Youth Day Cross and Icon in St George Deanery
On 5th July, the World Youth Day Cross and Icon was handed over to the St. George Deanery, starting an exciting journey for those at Kingsgrove, and Parishes in our area. Kingsgrove was given the honour of actually receiving the cross and icon from Leichhardt Parish. Members of JAM, Antioch, the Youth Team and our Young Adults Group all lent their hands and arms to carry the cross in a moving and exciting ceremony for all who were there. While carrying the cross, a blind man asked to join us, a moment that reminded us all of Simon of Sirene when he helped Jesus on Calvary. It touched us all.

We then had nearly 3 hours with the cross on the back of the truck while we waited for the right time to move to Calvary Hospital Kogarah. During these three hours, our young people were able to experience personal time with the cross and icon - an experience that not many people in the world will have! Some of our JAMsters were also interviewed and photographed for the Catholic Education Office's magazine!

From there the truck travelled to Kogarah for a healing service at Calvary Hospital, where many sick people were touched by the presence of these two unifying symbols of our faith.

But the highlight of the day was the Deanery Mass at Earlwood parish, where an estimated 2000 people attended and celebrated our faith in the presence of the cross and icon. The Church was packed out, with people watching the Mass on the big screen set up outside. The music was beautiful, and Bishop David inspired us all with his words of faith and encouragement to all young people earnestly seeking God. At the conclusion of the Mass, people began to venerate the cross and icon until the early hours of the morning. Thankyou to all involved in this amazing day, and we pray it is a sign of things to come in the next 12 months!

World Youth Day Cross and Icon at Kingsgrove
To the surprise of many young people at Kingsgrove (including the Youth Minister), the World Youth Day Cross and Icon made a visit to the Chinese Community at Kingsgrove! Unfortunately, some young people missed out on this event as they were on retreat, however the event was enjoyed by those who attended.

It was made all the more special as our former Parish Priest, Terry Brady, now Bishop Terry, helped us to celebrate the occasion.

World Youth Day Cross and Icon at Cronulla
The WYD Cross and Icon again came across a group of faithful and enthusiastic young people from Kingsgrove, and the St George Deanery at Cronulla! The day was amazing, with all sorts of talents from the Sutherland Shire contributing to the great day!
  St George Deanery Pilgrim Preparation
Kingsgrove Pilgrims have attended each of the St George Deanery Preparation evenings so far, and intend on attending the rest of them! We have been entertained with a theatrical recount of the patrons of WYD, and have also had the theme explained to us. Along with this, we have enjoyed some ice-breaker games, and met some of the pilgrims who we will be traveling with.
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament
For the six months prior to WYD, Kingsgrove hosted exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on the first Sunday of the month in order to pray for the success of the event. Each liturgy involved beautiful music, exposition, prayers and readings to help people to focus on World Youth Day.
  Kingsgrove Pilgrim Preparation
On 27th June, the pilgrims who are registered with Kingsgrove came together to meet, be informed and share some time together as they prepare for WYD! it was a great meeting, with everyone leaving more excited than when they arrived. With less than 2 weeks to go, who wouldn't be excited?!?!
St George Deanery Dinner Dance
100 young people registered within the St George Deanery came together for a night of food, friendship, dancing and music. The Deanery band entertained us with cover songs with a jazz feel while balloons were tied to hair, ties, wrists of anyone who was willing. A big thankyou to the Deanery team for putting the dance together!

World Youth Day 2005 in Cologne, Germany
In 2005, six young people from our Parish went to World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany, and had the experience of a lifetime. If you have seen any photos from the Papal Mass, you can get a glimpse of how big this event was.

The Pilgrimage walk to the Marianfeld

A sleeping crowd at the Marianfeld - just a small image!

Vigil Mass at the Marianfeld

At this Mass at the Marianfeld, the Pope announced that Sydney would host the next World Youth Day, and we haven't been able to contain our excitement! This global event has been occurring all over the world for over 20 years, the biggest was over 4million people in the Philippines! Ours wont be that big, but they are expecting more people from over the world than we had at the Olympics in 2000. Also, all the visitors will be at the same event at the same time, so the effect will be more impressive!
